Projects of Amy Bellows

Amy Bellows, enig99@yahoo.com of Forth Worth, Texas, USA has sent in 3 of her first projects and she describes them below.

"Here is a chessboard I made from 1/4" x 1 1/2" poplar strips. I stained half of the strips and left the other half natural. After cutting 32 perfect squares of each, I glued them to 1/2" plywood. The thin border is oak and the thick one is poplar. The edge is just pine screen moulding. I finished the whole board with tung oil and a satin polyurethane. The bottom is covered in black felt. (now it just needs pieces!)"

"Here is a vegetable/bread bin that I built today. I haven't decided on the stain or paint color yet, and there is some finish work to be done, but I am quite happy with the outcome! I was aiming for the rustic, country look."

"I just started woodworking about a year ago. I have lots of really "ambitious" plans, just waiting for the time and the skill level to complete them. The bench was my first "success" and now sits in our front hallway to disguise a rather large and unattractive air intake vent.

Since this was one of my very first projects, it was completed with the few tools I had at the time. I used a circular saw to cut the lengths of wood, a jigsaw to cut the curve in the cross brace (the curve was traced using the end of our BBQ grill - a 55 gallon drum), and my newly-purchased router rounded off the edges of the seat.

The seat is a laminated pine panel, bought pre-made and the rest of the dimensions are tailored to that, since I was afraid to cut it!! To cover my badly-done screw holes on the sides, I glued garden stakes over the holes."

"I made the display case for my husband's small collection of model motorcycles. It is made from pine also, with a pecan stain and matte polyurethane."
