From Don Bonar of Prairie Village, KS, DSBonar@aol.com, come these two terrific projects.

"I need to give credit on the rocking horse to plans from Ken Williams @ Wooden Memories Inc. in Bearlake Penn. He offers it as "Krackles" and puts a crackle finish on it. Once I saw it I knew I would make it "natural" from poplar. I changed a few things but it's pretty much straight from the plans which are very solid and clear. I'll definately go back to Ken for more!" ----Hey Don, whose your helper towards the rear right corner of your shop?

"I made the spinning wheel when I was 15 as a high school project. It won a national award and I got a three daytrip to Detroit as the guest of Ford who sponsored the event. It's from all native walnut my old shop teacher cut on his farm. You could have as much cured walnut as you wanted if you cut an equal amount and put it away in his old barn, for someone else. The spokes and part of the comb assembly were salvaged from an old torn down country school. The wood was about 80 years old and was harder than a bull's horn when we cut it. All but 3 wood screws in the treadle including the brass crank, was made from scratch. The design was an amalgamation of 10 or 15 wheels I found in local museums. All joints are tapered and the entire mechanism can be disassembled by hand in minutes for transportation in a covered wagon. It's actually a flax wheel and the funning looking comb assembly is for draping flax (compared to holding raw wool) as it is spun into cloth. No plans exist as I made it up as we went along".
