Projects of Bryan Cowing

Bryan Cowing bcowing@sympatico.ca of Woodstock, Ontario, Canada has sent in some of his great looking projects, and he describes them below.

"I drew my own plans for each of these chairs - the first one was this oak chair.

Then by refining the design from that first one, I built this Walnut rocker in a kid sized version."

Bryan's been at it again, making more beautiful projects. This time it's another of his great fireplaces, shown installed in his customer's home.

"This is an Early American style 4 poster bed in soft maple. Plan is free from Shopsmith 5 in 1 tool site, good plan, lots of instructions and diagrams. Posts are turned as 3 pieces, and glued together. Bed roll is 2 pieces. I finished it with 2 coats stain, 4-5 coats gloss lacquer. It was made for my 3 year old granddaughter."

Here are a couple of beautiful doll cradles Bryan made for 2 of his granddaughters, Charis and Grace - notice their names cut into the ends. The cradles were made from 7/8" thick pine and then stained with 2 coats of Benjamin-Moore Sherwood stain - no pre-stain conditioner was used. Then they were given several coats of a satin lacquer,,, that is the cradles were,,,not the girls. ;-))

"I made this solid cherry roll top desk in 1990 and I used a plan from FWW magazine as a guide."

"Solid cherry TV Armoire with pocket doors. Stain and finish from ML Campbell industrial finishes. Colour is cordovan and 4 coats satin magnalac lacquer. Handles from Lee Valley. Measures 43" wide x 75" high x 24" deep."

This is one of Bryan's latest creations,,, a corner mantle in red oak which is stained red mahogany and has a satin finish.

"Magazine holder in white oak, stain is golden oak and 2 coats poly."

"The TV stand I have been working on over the last 4 weeks is now complete. It's made of white oak and is stained golden oak and it has a lacquer finish.

It's 24" w x 18" d x 19" h. The feet are 3 inch diameter and the shape is taken from the little door knobs."

"Constructed with white oak, this fireplace mantle was inspired from one I saw in a Victorian house built around 1910. I finalized the design after a search on the web of mantles. This mantle replaces a simple one the builder installed in my house. It's stained with Min-Wax dark walnut, has 2 coats of sanding sealer and 3 coats of satin lacquer."

"Here's a pine double bed using a single bed plan from Canadian Workshop. I increased the size of the bed to accommodate a double bed in the spare room. The posts are 5 x 5, 3 pieces of 2 x 6 pine laminated. The head and footboard and side rails are from  2 x 6 pine and have a finished thickness of 1 3/4 inches."

"Also, a pic of the single pine bed made for the granddaughter. The posts on it are 3 1/2  x 3 1/2 inches and the head and footboard, side rails are dressed out at 1 1/4" thickness as per the plan."

"This pine washstand, circa 1760, has an extra set of drawers added to the plan. In the original plan, the  height was 30 inches. The extra drawer brought it to 36 inches, a more comfortable height for the mom. I made this for the new grandaughter that arrived last May."

"This pine washstand was inspired from one I saw in a magazine. I made this as a xmas present for the wife. It's finished with Minwax 230 stain and 4 coats gloss lacquer."

"This is an armoire I built for a friend who could not find what she wanted. She wanted a TV armoire with a dresser bottom and the fancy top. All solid oak construction. Min-Wax #211 stain and semi gloss laquer finish. "

"This is the headboard to match the armoire. The plan is from Canadian Workshop and the posts are beaded."

"This is a cherry curio cabinet, built for my mom - the plan was from Canadian Workshop. She finished it a dark cherry colour to match a dinning room set she has."

"The second is a billard rack that is no longer manufactured and it was built for a co-worker. Oak in poly finish."
