Dog Pull Toy

Here's a nice toy for the small child in your family. This hinged-body dog pull toy is very obedient and will follow your little friend whereever he or she goes.

This child pleasing toy can be made from any type of 1" wood you've got laying around. Cut out the plan on your scrollsaw or jigsaw, add the wheels and the pull cord and you've got a new pet for your little friend.

For the ears, I used some 1/4" wood I had to keep it sort of inperspective. I didn't add any eyes, but you could always drill a 1/4" hole through the head for them if you like.

After cutting out the pattern and sanding, it's time to make the hinging arrangement in the body pieces. On the front and rear sections, a 3/16" hole is drilled vertically through the upper tab from the top, and into the bottom tab, but not all the way through the bottom. Upon assembly later, a piece of 3/16 dowel will be glued into that hole in the bottom.

Now drill a 1/4" hole vertically through the centre of the end tabs of the centre body section. Dry fit and move the assembly in all directions and if you have any binding, it will be necessary to sand the corners/edges a bit to prevent that. I found that I needed to do some sanding on the ends of the centre body piece to allow it to move freely and not bind on the front and rear pieces, when making a turn.

When you're happy with the fit, assemble the body and glue the dowels in place in the bottom of the front and rear sections.

Make the appropriate wheel assemblies and attach them to the bottoms of the front and rear sections. Attach the ears to the head and add a pull cord

I don't know where the original came from, but here's the photocopied pattern a friend gave to me. The square size is hard to read so I thought I better tell you that the square size is 3/8".

It's best to apply the finish to this project prior to final assembly.
