Projects of Jim Flinn

These are some projects made by Jim Flinn of San Antonio, Texas, USA. arthur-flinn@us.army.mil He describes them below.

"Here are a few photos of a doll house that I made this past year for my granddaughter Gabby. It is scaled for full size Barbie dolls and the choice of colors as well. I used a plan that I purchased from "The Winfield Collection" (#S-FS3). The plans are complete for the house and furniture."

"My wife Karen did the interior decorating and the final result was one very happy granddaughter."

"Of course I had to make a few changes to the plans -- the stairs were my add on, the roof shingles are large craft sticks, each cut to size and glued on individually."

"Here's a stool that I made for my new shop in my garage. I made it out of scrap 2 x 4's and some dowels that I had in my scrap wood box."

"This is a plate rack that I made for a friend's husband's civil war plate collection. The piece is made out of pine, stained and then several coats of semi gloss varnish.  The shelves are dove tailed into the sides and the back is 1" x 6" tongue & groove siding. It's a little heavy but I wanted to make sure that the plates would not fall off the wall. I started the project in Oct of '98, but due to the cold winter and no heat in my shop, I finished it in the late spring.

I lived on Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, an Army base and I have a small shop in the back yard. Actually most of the work was done out of the shop on the 8' x 12' deck that my son and I added this year. So you could say that I have to be a fair weather wood worker."

"Here are some of the projects I completed this summer. The wine rack, was a modified plan I found in WOOD magazine. The wishing well is a scaled down version from the Winfield Collection.

Both projects are made from a mixture of popular and pine from thrown out pallets. My surface planer works wonders. The lumber is free and the extra work is very enjoyable. I love the looks on friend's faces when they see the wood in the "before" pile and then the completed project. I have used this technique on several other projects."

"The wishing well is used as a bird feeder. I have a small yard and had to scale it down so not to look out of place. Since it turned out too small for flowers in the bucket, it works perfectly as a bird feeder."
