Project by Charles Gerhart

The project on this page is one by the grandfather of one of our exhibitors. Wayne Gerhart of Seattle, Washington, USA, Wwwayno@aol.com, has sent in a wonderful project which was hand made by his grandfather Charles Gerhart. Wayne says that "This is truly a grandfather's woodwork," and he describes it more below.

"This is a wooden chain carved sometime around the great depression by my Grandfather, Charles Gerhart (1885-1951).  This is a softwood carving that has been formed by hand from a single block of wood.  The turnbuckle in the center of the chain actually pivots freely and the grain pattern aligns to prove that it is truly formed from a single piece of wood. The chain measures 38 inches long overall with the links being a uniform 1" wide by 2-1/4" long and 5/16" gage.  There are no splices in the wood anywhere.  The consistency of worksmanship is truly remarkable. I stand in awe of the patience that this man had."
