Projects by Koos Mathews

Koos Mathews jacobus.mathews@liblink.co.za has joined our group of exhibitors all the way from Pretoria, South Africa. He describes his projects below.

Here is some of the beautiful box work which Koos does so wonderfully!
The top is shown on the left in each case.

"Birdfeeder:  My family is also in the bird watching business and birdfeeders form a big part of my projects as I try to encourage friends to follow suit."

"One Million Club:  A framed name board for showing names of consultants having reached a certain target. Used Zimbabwean Cedar (old faithful !!) with teak. A glass panel painted from behind with "lead glass" inserts form the centre."

"Utility box:  Made this one for a client living in Botswana. Again just playing around not quite knowing what the end result will be."

"Wallclock:  Played around with this one. There is a small 15W globe fitted behind the door at the top, which if illuminated, shines down the face of the clock onto the brass piece. The brass piece is a false pendulum, only for the show and the lighting effect. The brass piece used to be an insert of a wooden ashtray used in my earlier smoking days. Teak, Imbuia & Saligna used."

"Trophy:  A trophy for "consultant of the month". Name plates are being fitted on each block, back & front. Used Kiaat and the old faithful Zimbabwean Cedar."

"Chess table:  Made for my income tax advisor. (Not as a bribe !!!!). Used Zimbabwean Cedar, Saligna, Teak and Kiaat. I must still try my hand at the actual chess pieces, but I think my lathe is a bit "rough" for such delicate work."

"Oregon box & table:  Made for somebody as a gift. This person had an "ancient" Oregon (several coats of paint) bookshelf falling apart, with an old Oregon window frame, which I used. The dark rim and feet on the table is mbiua (Brazilian, I think)."

  •
  • "The local youth movement's leader asked me for this pulpit. Made from std mdf board, and painted to look like something."

"This was a gift to a friend. The centre piece on the box lid is (what we call in South Africa) Wild Lilac which here has now been declared "illegal" to plant as it is an problematic intruder. This friend was driving on the motorway and a large piece of wood fell off a truck ahead of him. He stopped & collected this piece, part of which was the Wild Lilac used for this centre piece."

"The dark inlays are stinkwood (South African) and the rest Zimbabwean Cedar."
