Easy Patio Door Lock

Here's a quite "do-able" and inexpensive lock for your
sliding patio door which you can make for yourself in a few
moments, and with a minimum amount of materials. It affords as
much protection as the heavier store bought metal "lock
bars" and is quite secure.
WHAT YOU'LL
NEED
All you need is a length of 1/2" dowelling between the door
jamb (the vertical part of the frame) and the now slid closed
door, and a pack of self-sticking felt floor protectors. I bought
a 6 pack sold by DUTEX in a green pack - the size of each being 2
5/8" x 1/2" x 3/16"T for a couple of bucks.
WHAT YOU DO
Measure the distance between between the door jamb and the closed
door. "Measure twice and cut once" so that you get a
nice fit. Once you've got it just right, position it at about
waist height and mark the jamb and door. At this point, you might
want to give your dowelling a couple of coats of fast drying
spray lacquer to prevent it from getting dirty through handling.
Then while the lacquer is drying, you can proceed with your
mounts.

The piece of doweling will need something to hold it in place. This is where the felt floor protectors come into play. Trim and affix your cut pieces to form a "V" arrangement at both ends. Then, since they are self sticking, carefully apply them accordingly at your marks forming a "V".
The 1/2" dowel will be more than strong enough to keep the door securely closed and locked, and because there is very little weight to it,the dowel and "V" will do the job for years. However in the interest of your home's security, check regularly to be sure all elements are secure.
Ours has been in place for many months and we feel totally safe!
