Our Livingroom Reno Project

Here's a few shots of our
livingroom reno project from start to finish.

Livingroom Before

We always felt those poles around the landing leading to our spare room, were a bit reminiscent of the '50s, when our house was built, and we had always wanted to remove them.

We had a few ideas about how to change it, and our final choice was similar to this computer drawn half wall design, with the poles gone of course.

With the helpful advice from the members of a woodworking group I belong to, Rita's son Jim & I made the half wall.

After constructing it with a 60/30 brace to ensure it being square, and anchoring it to both the floor and the rear wall, we applied wall board & readied it for the painters/plasterers we had hired. We also replaced all the baseboards in the living room.

Here's a few shots of the project during their wall preparation for their painting. Purely for cosmetic reasons I ran a 2 x 10 down the outside of the stairs and did a small cove router treatment on the upper edges.

Livingroom After

The halfwall was capped off with a piece of lacquered, "trimmed to size" 1 x 6 solid oak, affixed in place using construction adhesive.

It's so nice to be back to normal, after being in such a state of disarray for about 6 weeks!

The crown molding patch, filling in a hole where one of the poles went, worked out great. My wife Rita, did a fine job of maintaining the profile. It's not been painted yet, but is hardly noticeable - it will be painted within the next week or so.

Thanks to all who supplied tips and advice!
