Fast, Easy and Decorative Sign
When my wife mentioned she wished
she had a nice desk sign for her new office, I thought I could
come up with something for her. The engraved plastic sign she
already had was about 10" long x 2" high, so I cut a
piece of oak 11" x 3". I decided that the upright part
of the sign should have a 12 degree slant and decided that the
base should be 2 1/4" wide X 11 1/4" long.
All edges were rounded over with my router, using a 1/4" roundover bit.
I accomplished the slant of the upright by cutting off the bottom of the upright at a 12 degree angle. It was easier to do the roundovers prior to trimming the bottom, than to do them after the bottom was trimmed.
After determining the desired position of the upright on the base, 2 holes were drilled in the appropriate positions. The holes were countersunk from the bottom of the base. The position of pilot holes to be drilled on the bottom and now slanted edge of the upright were marked. Shallow pilot holes were drilled on that bottom edge at 90 degrees to that slanted surface, so as not to come through the front surface. Using screws just long enough to catch, the unit was dry fitted together to ensure a good fit.
When satisfied, the piece was disassembled and finish sanded. It was re-assembled, this time using glue and screws. It was then stained with Minwax pickled oak stain. After 24 hours, it was coated with 3 coats of Para Paints satin finish waterbased topcoat. The existing plastic sign was affixed to the unit with doublesided carpet tape.
In only a couple of hours, Rita had an attractive sign for her new office, and I had one of her lemon pies. 8>)
