Our Living Room Window Replacement

We always wanted a bow window in our living room at the front of our home. Good friends Jimmy & Jenny Fraser recommended a window company which they had used and because their windows looked so nice, we decided to call the same company, Novoplex Window Industries Ltd., just north of Toronto. Installation of our new bow window has just been completed, and here is a small pictorial record.

This is a photo of our house before any work had started.

The original window is shown here, outlined by an orange line. As you can see the large front window was previously comprised of 5 separate windows, and the area that they occupied stretches across the front of the house, up to the attached garage.

A large bow window will replace the four windows on the right, and a new flat window will replace the one on the left.

Before and After

You can follow the complete job
from start to completion in the photos that follow.

The Work Begins

The guys arrived at about 8:00am on a cold
Friday morning, November 16, 2007 and got an early start. Pretty soon the 1st old window had been removed.

And it seemed that in no time at all, the rest were out too. The big job of replacing our livingroom's large front window had begun.

Compared to our recent temperatures, a cold spell had just hit Toronto. Taking the photos was a job in itself when you're fingers are so cold they don't move properly. I soon got some hot coffee and gloves. ;-))

At the rear of the photo on the right, you can see the support assembly being built. With a 21" protrusion in the bow, a strong support was a must. One installer waits while the other trims a piece to size on the chop saw in their truck.

Novoplex has fully stocked shops in their company trucks, one of which is parked in our driveway, so whatever is needed can be made on site in a few moments.

The first window has been set in place and more work
is done on the opening including levelling the critical support structure.

A bottom member of the support structure is checked for fit.

The 5 windows which comprise the bow window have now been fitted to the location. On the exterior, the support still needs to be insulated and closed in.

A view from the inside, shows the bow window basically completed. With some final sanding of the inside top and bottom of the newly constructed window, insulation between the elements, and the moldings, caulking and other finishing touches, this job is just about done.

Those lines seen running a few inches inside each edge of each window are tubular shaped polished brass. which is actually "inside" the window. That feature gives a really beautiful look to the window.

With the exterior trim to be applied, and the support structure to be completed, our renovation is almost completed.

Note: The circulation venting grates under the support is part of what we covered up with the siding. A previous owner put that in,but we had already closed it up.

Here are a few shots from different angles of the completed job.

The guys from Novoplex did a fantastic job and we are very happy.
